EPILOGUE

LIFE HAD A funny way of repeating itself.

Kendall was walking back to the McAfee Ranch after Rebel had taken off toward the barn.

The day was as clear and sunny as it had been three Septembers ago, when Kendall had worked her first day as a ranch hand. She ambled along, the sparse fringe on her worn, hot pink boots sparkling in the sunlight.

“That’s probably what spooked the coyote.” The one that had surprised Rebel and made her run before she’d had a chance to tie her reins properly to a post.

Thundering hooves approached. Finn was astride a galloping Tucker. Lizzie was behind him, riding a dapple gray with more balance and control on horseback than Kendall would ever have. Peanut trotted behind them, tongue hanging out of his graying muzzle.

Finn threw himself out of the saddle almost before he’d brought Tucker to a sliding stop in front of Kendall. And then his arms were around her, strong and comforting. “Are you all right? What happened? Rebel showed up without you.”

“Did you forget to tie her before you started snapping pictures?” Lizzie was seven and still thought she knew everything about the world. Or at least, the McAfee Ranch. She leaned on her saddle horn like the competent cowgirl she was becoming. “You know, when it comes to horses, there’s a process.” She grinned.

“I didn’t have the chance.” Kendall explained about the coyote, giving Peanut a reassuring pat.

“Are you all right, love?” Concern rimmed Finn’s eyes. His wedding ring caught the sun’s rays and glowed the way Kendall glowed whenever she thought about the path their love had taken.

Shortly after their wedding two years ago, they’d begun fostering a three-year-old boy. Michael was still with them, a quiet child with a curiosity that rivaled Lizzie’s. Michael filled their hearts, but the family at the ranch had grown in other ways. Julie and Dale had built a small bungalow not far from the original ranch house. Dale had recovered from his stroke enough to watch the kids and ride the horses.

There was still the possibility of expanding their family the more traditional way. Before Finn took his cancer treatments, Dr. Carlisle had connected them with a charity organization that funded sperm banks for male cancer patients. That avenue would be available to them if and when they wanted to pursue it.

“Love?” Finn prompted when Kendall still hadn’t answered him.

“I’m fine. I had both feet on the ground when it happened.” It felt as if she’d had both feet on the ground since the day she’d met Finn.

“Come on.” Finn drew her toward Tucker. “I’ll give you a ride back.”

“No.” She dug in her heels. “I’d rather walk. It’s days like today that make me feel grateful for so many things.”

“Like dirt and bumblebees?” Lizzie turned her horse around, whistling for Peanut. “Someone dropped a beehive off in the ranch yard. Grandpa Oscar shut all the barn doors and called in the experts.” With a mighty whoop, she sent her horse into a gallop.
